200 Years of the Constitution of 1822

Hugo Maciel

The current Constitution, introduced in 1976, is directly descended from the Political Constitution of the Portuguese Monarchy, promulgated precisely two centuries ago, during the reign of King John VI. To celebrate the Bicentennial of the 1882 Constitution, the Portuguese Republic, via the Portuguese Mint, issues a commemorative coin designed by the sculptor Hugo Maciel. On the obverse, we see a representation of the «three branches« of power. On the reverse, we see the symbol of the Crown at the time, and also the flourishes that adorned the cover of the Constitution of 1822, published by Portugal´s Official Printing Office, referencing the continuity of History.
